Job Description

Technical writers plan, create, and maintain educational content as an integral part of the engineering or user experience. The content is often in the form of documentation, but may also be UI text, sample code, videos, or other educational material. Regardless of the content medium, technical writers are distinguished by their abilities to explain complex topics in a way that’s useful to their audience.

As a Technical Writer on the team, you'll create content targeted to other engineers. That audience might be third-party engineers/architects for platforms such as Azure Cloud or AWS Cloud or Google Cloud, or internal engineers/architects working on a variety of technology.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Plan, create and maintain technical documentation for internal or external engineering audiences.
  • Define and refine structure and content for technical enablement documentation.
  • Edit, clarify and proofread documents written by others, and coach non-writers on ways to improve their writing skills.
  • Supplement engineers/architects documentation with relevant sample code in the documentation.
  • Find an appropriate level of technical evangelism while providing useful, informative, well-organized, and interesting documents targeted to a highly technical audience.
  • Research, interview, write, edit, and revise documents through multiple drafts and update cycles.
  • Shepherd the document from start to finish through the creation, editing, and publication process in collaboration with Partner Managers, Partner Engineers, Solutions Architects, and Content Publication teams.

 Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in technical writing, product documentation, or online publishing, preferably in cloud technologies.
  • Strong ability to read and understand source code written in Java, Python,.NET, and/or JavaScript.
  • Must have proven experience working in collaboration with engineers/architects daily to day basis.
  • Strong ability to navigate a complex technical landscape and interact with multiple stakeholders to discuss and achieve consensus upon the specifics for each guide.
  • Must have demonstrated Independence and taking initiatives (e.g. curious, resilient, and comfortable with ambiguity).
  • Must be assertive and proactive (e.g. write 'strawman' versions of guides with minimal input, initiate reviews, and revise-rewrite docs (rather than waiting for requests to rewrite).

Preferred qualifications

  • High-Level knowledge of Azure or AWS cloud
  • Some technical marketing or business writing experience might be helpful
